Sinochem Quanzhou Petrochemical has successfully commissioned its 260,000 t/y acrylonitrile (AN) project at the Quanhui Petrochemical Industrial Park in Quanzhou, Fujian Province. As a key project in Sinochem Holdings’ 14th Five-Year Plan and an upgrade to the Sinochem Quanzhou Petrochemical base, it leverages feedstock from the refinery-integration project to produce Acrylonitrile and other high-value-added chemicals.
The construction of the main facilities began on December 30, 2022. Sinochem Quanzhou Petrochemical adhered to its six control objectives of “safety, environmental protection, quality, schedule, cost, and compliance” and completed construction of the AN unit (acrylonitrile 260,000 t/y), MMA unit (methyl methacrylate, 100,000 t/y), SAR unit (sulfuric acid regeneration, 200,000 t/y), and utility and auxiliary facilities over the 23 months. The project achieved mechanical completion and entered trial operation on November 30, 2024.
By Apr 10, 2025, the AN unit achieved first-attempt feedstock introduction success. By Apr 13, the AN product passed all quality tests. By April 24, MMA met high-quality standards after strict examinations. The entire AN-MMA complex passed trial operations with all qualified products.
Acrylonitrile is a vital monomer for synthetic fiber, rubber, and resin production, and is essential in producing carbon fiber, ABS resin, and nitrile rubber, with wide applications in aerospace, NEVs, electronics, and environmental sectors.
Methyl methacrylate is an important organic chemical raw material and industrial product, primarily used in the production of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), PVC processing aids (ACR), and methyl methacrylate-styrene-butadiene copolymers (MBS). It is also used in the manufacturing of resins, adhesives, and coatings.
The successful commissioning of the project strengthens Sinochem’s downstream propylene industrial chain, enhances resource efficiency, boosts product value, and solidifies the extension and strengthening of the industry chain.
By establishing an industrial model of “refining upstream and chemical downstream with integrated chain development,” Sinochem Energy Quanzhou Base has built a full-industry-chain competitive advantage from crude oil processing to high-value-added new materials. This will further enhance the self-sufficiency in new materials and drive high-quality regional economic development.
